Vitacura is creating a connected network of green spaces across the city, using planting and biodiversity-focused design to restore ecosystems, reduce water use, and improve wellbeing in a rapidly warming and water-scarce urban environment.
Challenge
- Rising temperatures and prolonged drought increasing pressure on water resources
- Urban heat island effect reducing liveability and public health
- Fragmented green spaces limiting biodiversity and ecological function
Delivered / achieved
- 34 green infrastructure projects delivered since 2021
- 13,400 trees and 166,000 plants integrated into the urban landscape
- Up to 40% reduction in water consumption across green spaces
Impact / approach
- Connected green corridors link streets, parks, and natural areas to support biodiversity and cooling
- Low-water, climate-adapted planting reduces irrigation demand while improving ecosystem health
- Community engagement programmes, including schools and residents, embed long-term stewardship of green spaces
