A scientific research vessel, with two state-of-the-art submersibles on board, is on a voyage of discovery never before attempted. The RV Odyssey will carry scientists from the Maldives, UK, India, and South Africa on a pioneering 35-day mission to one of the most climate change threatened parts of the Indian Ocean, beginning September 4.
The ambitious adventure will take place in uncharted waters off the Maldives in a joint endeavour between the Maldivian Government and the UK science foundation Nekton, which exists to map, sample, and protect the world’s oceans.
The newest of the two submersibles aboard the ship - the REV Ocean owned Aurelia - was the subject of extensive sea trials off the coast of Barcelona this summer. She is now certified as the world’s most advanced craft of her kind. The other - the Omega Seamaster 2 - is a three seater submersible branded the same as the submersible on the earlier Nekton mission to the Seychelles in 2019 where, in partnership with scientists from that nation, marine explorers found dozens of new species and mapped the waters off the coast which were previously uncharted below 30 metres.
Each submersible can carry a pilot and two scientists - the Aurelia will operate at depths of up to 1000 metres. The Omega Seamaster 2 will be used to explore the first 500 metres below the surface.
Marine biologists, data scientists and film makers will conduct extensive mapping operations, collect species samples and video first-hand the state of the corals around the Maldives - the lowest lying nation on earth - which is on the frontline of climate change. All samples and data collected will remain the property of the Maldives - a departure from some western-led science expeditions of the past. The mission will also see the first all-female aquanaut crew undertake the maiden dive in the submersibles. The “First Descent” is scheduled for September 11.
